Synopsis
Uncover the legacy of Australia's most successful women's basketball program as they pursue their first-ever three-peat amidst a global pandemic.
"Go Big" follows the Canberra Capitals, Australia's most successful women's basketball team, on their quest for a historic 3-peat; a feat that has eluded them despite nine championships in 20 years.
The film provides viewers with an-all access look at the Caps' challenging journey as they enter the 2020 WNBL hub season and battle through unprecedented pandemic challenges while chasing their ultimate goal.
Beyond the court, "Go Big" also highlights the club's historical off-court impact, from being the first professional sports team in Australia to wear the Pride rainbow on their jerseys for a season, to Lauren Jackson’s groundbreaking $1 million contract (still unmatched over a decade later), and the introduction of childcare for players.
Through professionalism, teamwork, and a fierce commitment to excellence, "Go Big" is a riveting display of the Caps' indomitable spirit that will inspire viewers to chase their own dreams, no matter how daunting they may be.
Background
Australia's most successful female professional basketball program.
Since 1987, The UC Capitals have won 9 WNBL championships making them the most successful WNBL team in history and Canberra’s most accomplished national sporting team.
A true hometown icon, throughout the early 00's and before women's sport had progressed to its current standing, the Caps were regularly selling out 5,000-seat crowds and printing on double-page spreads in the local paper.
And while known for their on-court success, their off-court pioneering of diversity and equality is equally as impressive. The Caps were the first national sporting team to wear pride colours on a jersey for a season, they also negotiated the largest female athlete contract in Australian sports history (Lauren Jackson for $1,000,000).
The Caps are trailblazers on and off the court.
This is their story.
Impact Vision
The project's vision is to normalise and hero the broadcasting and media coverage of women in sports and provide inspiring, world-class, female role models for future generations.
For this reason, the documentary has created a social impact campaign through the Documentary Australia Foundation.
Director’s Statement
"...one of my first memories watching live sport was my Dad taking me to the 1999 WNBL grand final. An exciting Australian Institute of Sport side - made up of 17 and 18 year-olds - was trying to be the first AIS team to take the professional women’s title..."
